Donations to Poor Families in Shanghai

Donation activities were held Sunday for 10,000 poor families in Shanghai, the largest metropolis of the country.

Chen Tiedi, chairman of the municipal people’s congress and chairman of the city’s charity fund, was the first to donate money. The charity fund was set up six years ago.

Among the donors were many local officials as well as schoolchildren, according to witnesses.

Chen Yi, a local middle school girl who is from a single-parent family and a beneficiary of local charitable programs herself, donated 17,283 yuan in the name of the Shanghai Self-Reliance Brigade, a local body comprising students from poor families.

The 18,000 members of the poor students’ club also want to share their love with other poor families in the city, she said.
