Chinese Firm Wins US Construction Contracts

China State Construction Engineering Corp. (CSCEC), the country's largest state-owned construction firm, has obtained US$115 million contracts in the United State since January.

The corporation's subsidiary in the United States has received offers from owners of two projects on Oct. 20, following its successful bid for Marriott hotel, a US$240 million worth project in New York, according to the Chinese State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).

The commission said Thursday in a report on its official Website that the projects include a conference center of the University of South Carolina, worth US$17 million, and a middle school in the Colombia city of South Carolina State, worth US$15 million.

The conference center is CSCEC's first project in universities after it entered the United States in 1999, marking the corporation's leap in the US public projects market, said the report.

At present, a dozen of projects in the United States, including the new office building of Chinese embassy in the United States, are under construction by CSCEC, triggering a sales volume of US$300 million.

In 2010, CSCEC will try to sign US$700 million worth of contracts in the United States, obtain a sales volume of US$500 billion and become one of the top 400 construction companies in the United States, the report said.
