Optoelectronics Industry Grows Rapidly
The total annual output value of China's optoelectronics industry is expected to reach US$10 billion at the end of this year after it witnessed an average growth rate of 50 percent over the past five years, sources said over the weekend.

This compared with the world average of 20 percent, Gan Fuxi, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the ongoing annual meeting of the China Association of Sciences and Technology Saturday.

The total output value for the world's optoelectronics industry is expected to exceed US$200 billion this year.

China generated about US$1 billion worth of optoelectronic products in 1995, and the figure became five billion US dollars in 2000, Gan said.

The industry has been growing rapidly in Changchun, capital of Jilin Province, northeast China, Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, central China, and Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, south China.

Mu Guoguang, also member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said there is bright prospect for consumer optoelectronic goods, such as digital cameras and liquid crystal display TVs.
