The 2002 BusinessWeek Forum, co-hosted by the Tianjin municipal government and BusinessWeek, a US-based economic publication, opened in Tianjin yesterday, sparking new discussions on opportunities arising from China's accession to the World Trade Organization.
With the theme of "New Century, New Horizons: Business Opportunities in China after WTO," the forum will focus on many issues, including the advantages WTO will bring to bear in attracting foreign investment, the future development of state-owned enter-prises, and the entry of overseas businesses into the domestic market.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Tianjin Mayor Li Shenglin said that it would be wise for Tianjin to deepen international cooperation and enhance overall competitiveness in line with global economic trends, Xinhua reported.
More than 500 political, business and academic dignitaries are attending the forum, including former U.S. President George Bush, former Australian Prime Minister Robert Hawke, and Supachai Panitchpakdi, the WTO director general-designate.
