Sporting Goods Show Opened
Sporting goods businesses, experts and associations from China and abroad Friday gathered for the opening of the 10th China International Sporting Goods Show, the largest of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region.

More than 1,000 sporting goods enterprises are taking part in the four-day event, which covers a total area of 76,000 square metres.

The event has also attracted sports-goods associations from 14 countries and regions, along with 1,000 businesses and purchasing groups from more than 30 countries and regions.

Masato Mizuno, president of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry, told yesterday's opening ceremony: "China has become the world's leading country in the manufacture of sporting goods as well as in having a huge potential consumer market for these sporting goods."

In 2000, sports goods with a value of 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) sold in China.

The Shanghai show is dominated by a number of well-established Chinese brands such as Li Ning and Double Happiness, along with a good many new comers such as Deerhui and Bieke.

Li Ning Friday announced at the show that it was teaming up with lycra-maker DuPont by becoming the US company's first co-brand partner in China.
