IT Industry Grows in First Quarter
The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) stated yesterday that the electronic information industry fulfilled an industrial-added value of 66.27 billion yuan (US$7.9 billion) in the first quarter of the year, representing growth of 37.5 percent on the previous year.

Sales of products in the sector reached 317.85 billion yuan (US$38.2 billion) - up 30.2 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Profits in the first three month of the year stood at 11.31 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion), up 24 per cent on last year.

"The industry is on a stable, fast and healthy development track," said the MII statement.

Factors such as corporate reform, structural adjustment of products and technological innovation among IT-related enterprises contributed to the substantial growth of the industry, analysts said.

According to the national watchdog for the IT industry, exports of electronic information products achieved US$25.71 billion - up 44.4 per cent on the previous year. They accounted for 29.8 per cent of total exports.

Double-digit growth can be found in many industries such as handsets, PCs, notebooks, colour TVs, printers, displayers and integrated circuits.

Analysts believe China's membership of the World Trade Organization has led to a high level of international co-operation and competition, which has forced domestic enterprises to speed up corporate reform and devote more efforts to research and development as well as the structural adjustment of products.
