China's quality inspection administrations at all levels hunted down fake and shoddy products valued at 1.13 billion yuan (US$136 million) in the first five months of this year, an official said over the weekend.
Wang Qinping, deputy director of the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said a total 79,000 illegal cases concerning the production of fake and shoddy goods had been investigated from January to May.
In its efforts to combat the illegal manufacturing of products used to fight severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the administration investigated more than 12,000 cases, which involved unqualified products valued at 70 million yuan (US$8.4 million) all over the country.
The fake and shoddy anti-SARS products included exposure suits, masks, disinfectant and other sanitary products.
While continuing the supervisory efforts on SARS related products, the administration will further reinforce inspection of production of construction materials, food products and Dushuqiang, a strong rat poison, in the remaining half of this year, Wang said.
