HK Seizes $1.3 Mln Worth of Suspected Smuggled Goods

Hong Kong Marine Police seized suspected smuggled goods worth of 1.3 million US dollars off east of South Ninepin Island on Sunday and arrested eight men related to the case.

The goods were seized from a car go vessel heading towards waters of the mainland on Sunday morning, when Hong Kong's marine police was conducting anti-illegal immigration and smuggling operation on the sea.

Though spotted by marine police, the vessel kept traveling at a high speed and was stopped after a tense pursuit, said a statement issued by the marine police.

About 400 boxes of assorted computer components including hard disc drives, laptops, projectors and computer chips with a total market value of over 10 million HK dollars (around US$1.3 million) was found in the vessel.

The eight men aboard, aged between 32 and 50, were arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo.

They are still being detained for enquiries and the case will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for follow-up action.
