Guangdong immigration have expelled 107 foreigners for illegally entering, living or working in China, the Yangcheng Evening News reported Thursday.

Guangdong had launched a campaign against foreigners who were illegally living or working in China since last November, police said. In the campaign, 167 foreigners were detained.

Some 115 people were caught for allegedly illegally entering or leaving China in 37 separate incidents.

On Nov. 14, 2003, Guangzhou police caught eight Singaporeans in Haizhu District for allegedly organizing human smuggling to the United States. It was the largest haul of foreign human smugglers in China.

Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhuhai and Zhaoqing also launched campaigns against illegal residents.

Meanwhile, Guangdong and Hong Kong police launched a major joint campaign against mainlanders illegally entering and living in Hong Kong Nov. 12 to 15, 2003, when 249 mainlanders were expelled from Hong Kong. Since then, the number of Guangdong residents being expelled by Hong Kong police dropped 26 percent compared with the same period in 2002.

Police said Guangzhou had effectively curbed human smuggling.
