Jiang Greets Megawati's Election

President Jiang Zemin on Monday sent a congratulatory message to Megawati Soekarnoputri on her election as president of the Republic of Indonesia.

China and Indonesia have made great progress in advancing friendly exchanges and co-operation in the fields of politics, economy, trade, science and technology in recent years, said Jiang in his message.

And he pledged to contine efforts for the establishment and development of lasting and stable goodneighbourly ties with Indonesia based on mutual trust and all-round co-operation.

Foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan also voiced hope that political stability would be restored to Indonesia as early as possible so as to benefit the country's economic recovery.Speaking shortly before his meeting with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien in Hanoi, he stressed Indonesia's importance in Asia.

When asked to comment on the Indonesian People Assembly's decision to impeach President Abdurrahman Wahid on charges of corruption and mismanagement, Tang said it was an internal affair of that country and China always respected the choice of people of other countries.

China is a friendly country of Indonesia, he said, adding that political stability in Indonesia will ensure early restoration of its economic recovery so its people can lead a happy and stable life in the future.
