Chinese State Councilor Meets Icelandic FM

Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi met here Monday with Halldor Asgrimsson, Iceland's minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade.

Wu spoke highly of the sound development of China-Iceland relations since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago, and noted that the two countries have had sustained trade growth.

She said the two countries have great potential for cooperation in areas of geothermal power, fishery and shipbuilding industries. China's drive to develop its vast western areas and its upcoming entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) mean the country will be more open to the outside world and therefore will offer new opportunities to foreign investors.

Asgrimsson said China has made great achievements in its reforms and opening up to the outside world. He said he is happy at the development of bilateral relations and hopes the relations will grow further.

With China expected to enter the WTO soon, Iceland will use the opportunity to strengthen its cooperation in economic and other areas with China, he said.
