Li Peng Starts Visit to Uruguay

Chinese top legislator Li Peng arrived Uruguay Monday on a three-day official visit to Uruguay, saying he is looking forward to holding in-depth discussions with Uruguayan leaders on various regional and world issues.

In a written statement released upon his arrival, Li said Sino-Uruguayan friendly relations have developed smoothly ever since the two countries established diplomatic relations 13 years ago.

The visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Uruguay last April has served to usher the bilateral relationship to a new level, Li pointed out.

The two countries hold identical or similar views on many international issues and have good cooperation in handling world affairs. Bilateral trade and economic cooperation has been improved steadily too, he added.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, expressed the belief that his visit will be conducive to the development of Sino-Uruguayan friendship and cooperation.

During his stay, Li will hold talks with Uruguayan Acting President Luis Hierro and Acting President of National Congress of Uruguay Alejandro Atchugarry Bonomi.

Uruguay is the fourth leg of Li's five-nation visit to North Africa and Latin America which has brought him to Algeria, Cuba and Argentina and will take him to Tunisia.
