Attacks on Other Countries Will Based on Proof: Britain

Military action against countries other than Afghanistan as part of the war on terrorism will be based on proof, a spokesman for Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Sunday.

He was reacting to press reports that action was being planned against Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

"In terms of the war on terrorism we have always said this is a multi-faceted campaign but equally we have also said any future military action would have to be based on evidence," he said.

"This campaign is not over. We are still in the middle of fighting the war in Afghanistan."

The Sunday Times, quoting officials in Washington and London said Britain and the United States were planning attacks in Somalia, Sudan and Yemem against targets linked with Osama bin Laden, the main suspect behind the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Earlier a Ministry of Defence spokesman, contacted by AFP, played down the story but did not exclude the possibility of future action in the three countries.

He said efforts were presently being focused on Afghanistan.
