Bush to invite Jiang to US: Official

US President George W. Bush will Thursday invite Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the United States for a visit expected in the fall, US officials told reporters.

"The president, in remarks today, will invite President Jiang to the United States," said one of the officials, who requested anonymity.

Another official, who also declined to be named, said the invitation would be for the fall.

Bush arrived in Beijing early Thursday on the third leg of a week-long trip to Asia that has already taken him to Tokyo and Seoul.

The visit comes exactly 30 years to the day since then-American president Richard Nixon began a landmark trip to China.

Bush leaves Beijing for Washington on Friday.
