Top Chinese Legislator Meets Former Japanese FM

National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Li Peng met Thursday with former Japanese Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka and her husband Naoki Tanaka, a member of the Japanese Diet.

Extending warm welcome to the Tanakas, Li praised Makiko's father, former Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, for his insightful political decision to normalize the diplomatic relations between China and Japan.

The Chinese government and people would never forget the outstanding contribution made by Kakuei Tanaka, Li stressed.

Li said this year marked the 30th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties, hoping both sides would elevate relations in the new century on the basis of adhering to the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement.

Li also extended his appreciation for the efforts of Makiko Tanaka in improving Sino-Japanese ties, hoping Tanaka could continue to make new contributions in this regard.

Tanaka said she hoped take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties to strengthen exchanges, cooperation and mutual understanding between Japan and China, so as to realize common development and prosperity.

The Tanaka couple are here at the invitation of the China-Japan Friendship Association.
