Lebanese Guerrillas Fire Rockets at Israeli Troops

Four Katyusha rockets hit Kiryat Shemona near the Israeli-Lebanese border early Wednesday, the military said, as fighting with Lebanese guerrillas continued to heat up. There were no early reports of injuries.

The rocket attack came one day after Lebanese guerrillas fired missiles and machine guns at Israeli troops along the border, drawing Israel's airstrikes and artillery fire.

One of the rockets on Wednesday landed in a backyard, while the others hit unpopulated areas in the town in the Upper Galilee region, the military said.

The front has been largely dormant since Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 after an 18-year occupation.

But tensions have been rising since Israeli forces moved into the West Bank about two weeks ago searching for Palestinian militants involved in a series of suicide bombings in Israel.

The recent border attacks are widely seen as an attempt by the guerrillas to aid the Palestinians by entangling Israel on another battlefront.
