Russia to Continue to Seek Peace Treaty with Japan

Visiting Russian Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov said on Tuesday that Russia will continue to seek a peace treaty with Japan, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

Russia viewed the peace treaty as one of three key issues between the two countries along with the need for collaboration toboost economic ties and deal with international issues, Losyukov said during his meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi.

The two also agreed to step up work to realize a visit to Russia by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in December ornext January, according to Kyodo.

Kawaguchi was also quoted as telling Losyukov that Japan wants to discuss with Russia how to maintain arrangements aimed at boosting activities between the young people in both countries.

They also discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the report said.
