Whiz Kid Helps Tibet Prosper

Nyima Zhaxi, one of the "Ten Excellent Youths in Tibet," has made great contributions to the development of computer science in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

"My homeland used to be isolated from the rest of the world. Today it is linked to the outside world by computer," said Nyima, who is the youngest associate professor at Tibet University.

Personal computers have entered ordinary homes in the cities of Tibet, and Internet cafes can be found in many downtown streets in Lhasa, the capital, Xinhua news agency reported.

Nyima, who had never left home before he entered East China Normal University in Shanghai, saw a computer for the first time in his life while at school.

After graduation, Nyima launched his career at Tibet University by setting up a human resources management system for the school.

In October 1992, he completed a three-year study on Chinese word processing software and succeeded in developing a Tibetan word processing program.

Currently, Tibet University has adopted the program to print teaching materials and edit the famous Tibetan epic "King Gesser," the longest epic in the world. In 1997, Nyima and his colleagues worked out a coding method for the Tibetan language.
