Love Seekers Urged to Seek Help Carefully

The Shanghai Matchmaking Agency Supervision Association is advising those looking for love to avoid being cheated by only dealing with its member companies, which use the association's standard contract and legal invoice.

It also suggests those seeking a mate pick a matchmaking company that is suitable for someone of their age and background, such as those that provide service especially for white-collar workers or middle-aged and old people.

Yu Xinwu, a local man in his seventies, said he had spent more than 4,000 yuan (US$482) over the past nine months trying to find a wife. He has asked dozens of agencies for help, usually paying at least 100 yuan for one date.

"I've never seen a dating companion twice," he said. "I found many women unsuitable at first sight."

Huang He, a senior official with the city's matchmaking supervision association, said Yu could have avoided losing money if he had gone to qualified agencies, especially those set up for elderly people, which tend to charge lower fees.

Currently the association has some 80 member companies, which account for about 80 percent of the city's matchmakers.

However, a 34-year-old woman complained to the local media about the poor service provided by City White Collar Friend Making Club, one of the association's member company, accusing the organizers of breach of contract.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, alleged she paid 280 yuan to take part in a matchmaking party called Eight-Minute Dating last Friday, but the event was far different from what the company promised.

"I was assured that at least 15 excellent white-collar men would be introduced to me and I would talk to them for eight minutes each," she said.

But the woman couldn't find enough male partners or quality candidates at the party.

Lu Zhengdong, the club manager, denied the accusation.

"Speed-dating parties are one of the most popular services my club offers. We have held more than 50 similar activities successfully so far."
