Indulge yourself
Adjust font size:

It's that time of year when everyone is filled with excitement and hope for the New Year. Most of us make resolutions, set goals and evaluate how many of last year's resolutions were actually completed. And in Shanghai, it seems challenging to apply so many of these "healthy" lifestyle choices as the party just never seems to stop, especially around this time of year. By now most of us have probably vowed to make changes like eating healthier, drinking less and exercising regularly.

In an effort to prepare for all these new and healthy habits, why not indulge in some rejuvenating spa treatments? If you've been looking for an excuse to pamper yourself, then now is the time. Think of it as a cleansing of the mind, body, and soul; or as a way to reward yourselves for all that you've achieved this past year.

So I've gathered together a few different places that I recommend for ultra relaxation and renewal:

For a relaxing experience that's quite reasonably priced, I recommend going to the Shanghai Taipan Spa on Dagu Lu. They offer a wide variety of treatments and massages and it's a great place to recover from a big night out. You can relax in your own private room while watching your own DVDs and receiving a foot massage, and to top it all off they serve complimentary food and drinks. Their menu is limited, ranging from pineapple cakes (yummy) to noodles, but it's fairly satisfying. The staff is really relaxed and let you hang out as long as you like.

Aroma Age is a fantastic spa for receiving full-body or foot massages. A sense of ambiance fills the air upon entering and one feels calm and relaxed after just a few minutes of being inside. Aroma Age is excellent for relieving tension after a long day at work.

If you're looking for a place with a bit more atmosphere, Shanghai's ubiquitous Dragonfly spa chain is always reliable in providing spectacular aromatic massages. This might be better for someone who wants to escape from the city for a while, as their venues are super quiet with soothing music and fragrances that arouse the senses. It's so relaxing sometimes you forget that you're in Shanghai! I always leave Dragonfly feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Another spa with a relaxing environment to stimulate the senses is Aspara. They offer a variety of body treatments as well as waxing and nail care services. If you've never been here before, I suggest trying one of their outstanding facials.

And for those of you who really want to splurge, the Banyan Tree Spa in the Westin Hotel is fabulous. They have amazing packages that include 3 or 4 treatments from body scrubs to facials. I recommend going with your partner and getting the romantic couples treatments, and finish by bathing together in an enormous bathtub full of rose petals.

So now that you've got what you need to treat yourself to something special, start the New Year with renewal and relaxation!
