Japanese CEO Calls for Closer Ties
Between APEC Partners

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies should build win-win relationships with China through economic and technical cooperation and the exchange of human resources, said a senior Japanese business executive here Friday.

Addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit, Shigeji Ueshima, chairman and executive director of Mitsui and Corporation Ltd., said that efforts should be made to promote not only the movement of goods and capital, but also people-to- people and cultural exchanges.

He noted that China is viewed by some APEC economies as an economic threat, because the country is in competition with some APEC members in a number of product areas.

However, competition and coexistence with China should be what the Asian business community expect to achieve, he said, adding that Japan has had enjoyed a more complementary relationship with China.

He pledged efforts to help China in the development of its west as Japan views this region as a giant consumer market.
