An American expatriate who contracted Dengue fever two weeks ago is recovering in a Shenzhen hospital.

Timothy Klein, 34, was admitted to Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital on July 10 with a high fever, and is expected to be discharged in a couple of weeks.

Deng Yuanfei, a senior physician and director of the hospital's in-patient department, said it was the first case of Dengue fever in Futian District.

Shenzhen now has two confirmed Dengue fever cases, the first was a migrant worker in Longgang District, Deng said.

Klein had been running a fever two weeks before he went to the hospital.

"After giving him all tests regarding fever symptoms, including a blood test for Dengue fever which was sent to the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention on July 14, we finally confirmed he was a Dengue fever patient July 17," said Cai Yueming, a doctor with the hospital's in-patient department.

"He had been to Xi'an in Shaanxi Province and Dongguan before running a fever," Cai said.

Klein came to Shenzhen with his family a year ago. He works for a U.S. trading company at its Shenzhen branch and commutes regularly between Shenzhen and Dongguan. He has been in China for many years and speaks fluent Chinese.

Doctors warned people to protect themselves from mosquitoes that carry the disease.
Officials with the municipal health bureau declined to comment.
