F4 and the Trail of Teen Adulation
All the four handsome pop stars from Taiwan had to do was to smile and thousands of young girls were swooning as though crazy; screaming loudly; some even happily fainting.

Such was the scene at Metro City in Xujiahui at the weekend, when more than 6,000 local teen-agers, mostly young girls between 12 and 16 years old, gathered to catch a glimpse of southeast Asia's newest pop sensation, F4.

Thousands of local teen-agers throng Metro City in Xujiahui in Shanghai to catch a glimpse of the newest pop sensation, F4, on May 19.

While the fabulous foursome played for only 10 minutes at 9:40 pm, many fans had been waiting for their performance for nearly 15 hours.

"We arrived here at 6 a.m. because we wanted to occupy a vantage position to see F4. I love them so much. You can't imagine how excited I was when I heard they were coming to Shanghai," said Lu Renjie, a young girl waiting at Metro City.

A security guard at the venue unabashedly admitted that he had never seen such a freaked out crowd before.

"Because most of the fans were juvenile, we had to try all means to persuade them to calm down to avoid pandemonium and other crowd-related dangers," he added.

F4 first attained fame by performing in a TV play "Meteor Garden." The group then cut an album of the same name, F4 - meaning four men as nice as flowers - which scaled unbelievable heights of popularity in Taiwan and Hong Kong early this year. As VCDs of the play and CDs of the album flooded the city, F4 caught the imagination of local fans as well.
