Shanghai Busy Tackling 'White-pollution' Problem

Shanghai has reclaimed 500,000 plastic take-away containers every day this year, accounting for 62 percent of the consumption volume per day, according to the latest statistics.

The city has assigned the job of reclaiming plastic take-away containers to all the environmental sanitation departments of each district and county, said Zou Hua,spokesman with the city's waste administration office.

Shanghai has promoted rubbish-classification or the separation plastic take-away containers from other rubbish.Cleaners will be sent to restaurants and office buildings to reclaim plastic lunchboxes.

Four special transfer stations for gathered plastic containers have been built in the east area, west area, south area and north area, forming a strong reclaiming network.

Shanghai issued a policy last year to give 1fen (0.12 cents)to people for every plastic container they pick up and send to the reclaiming stations. The reclaimed containers will be sent to the plastic regenerating firms and can be used for making products such as building material and raincoats.
