Chinese Travelers Hit Road in Record Numbers

Tourism may be in a slump in most nations because of the terrorists attacks, but Chinese travelers hit the road in record numbers last week.

The number of tourists in 87 major scenic spots across the country reached 9.86 million during the weeklong National Day holidays, with incomes from ticket sales surpassing 270 million yuan (US$32.5 million).

There were no serious accidents involving tourists during the week, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Chinese people have celebrated a safe golden tourism week," said Li Renzhi, director-general of the Industry Management Department of the China National Tourism Administration.

The government paid great attention to tourism safety.

In September, the tourism administration began cooperating with ministries in maintaining tourism order and inspecting several areas.
