City to Add More Green to Highway

The city planed that by 2005 some 30 percent of the area of its main highways will be covered with greenbelts to improve environment and ecology,Xinmin Evening News reported.

Now the greenbelt coverage stands at 20 percent.Some 3.6 million trees have been built along roads of nearly 4,000 kilometers connecting the city with neighboring areas.

The green coverage per capita reached 1.5 square meters.

The city spent some 80 million yuan (US$10million)last year building green lands along the city Outer-Ring Road and Huqingping Road extending from Shanghai to Jiangsu Province.

The widest roadside greenbelt of some 100 meters has been built along the Outer-Ring Road.
