Technical staff from an enterprise's sewage disposal department in Shizuishan City observe the water quality November 23, 2003. The city, located in the north end of the Ninxiang Hui Autonomous Region, is an industrial city dominated by coal, metallurgy, chemical production and other industries. Echoing the government's initiative to build a garden city, local enterprises have invested over 100 million yuan (US$12.9 million) in pollution control projects since 2002, resulting in noticeable environmental improvement.
