In July 1952, in order to solve the issue of prisoners of the Korean War, Chinese negotiators raised the principle that each side should repatriate all the armed prisoners of the other side. But the Americans insisted on "voluntary repatriation" and they arbitrarily announced that the armistice negotiation would adjourn sine die. Then they launched an attack on the position of two companies of Chinese Volunteers in the Triangle Hill.

The Triangle Hill lies to the south of Wu Shengshan Mountain, the key strategic points in middle line of the Chinese Volunteers. The Chinese position was protruding and directly threatened the enemy's Jin Hua line. In order to exert military pressure on Chinese Volunteers forces, gain an advantageous position in negotiation and improve their defense in Jin Hua area, the enemy mounted a frenzied attack on Chinese Volunteers forces. This was the largest military attack for the whole year, aiming to force the Chinese Volunteers to give in.

The American side mobilized more than 60,000 soldiers, 300 cannons, 170 tanks and 3,000 planes. They fired more than 19 million shells and dropped over 5,000 bombs to the 3.7 square kilometers position of two companies of the Chinese Volunteers. The battle was unprecedentedly fierce. The density of artillery even exceeded that of the Second World War. The position of the Chinese Volunteers on the mountaintop was cut two meters low. Some rocks on the hill was bombed into scorched-earth. The 40,000 volunteers relied on the trenches as their primary solid position and bravely and tenaciously fought back against the offensive army.

Volunteered soldiers on the Trial Angle Hill relied on the trenches and mounted the counter attack.

The Battle of Triangle Hill lasted for 43 days and the Chinese Volunteers fought repeatedly over the positions with the enemy for 59 times and the Volunteers beat off more than 900 attacks of the enemy and finally kept the position and set an outstanding example of the war of resistance.
