On the afternoon of October 18, 1998, Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, met with Koo Chen-fu, Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, and Koo's wife, Yan Chou-yun.

Jiang warmly welcomed Koo Chen-fu and expressed his views on important issues concerning cross-Straits relations. He listened to Koo's opinions on similar issues.

During the meeting, Jiang acknowledged Koo's unremitting efforts in improving cross-Straits ties. He also spoke highly of the consensus of four points that Koo Chen-fu and Wang Daohan, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, had reached previously.

Finally, Jiang encouraged Koo to carry on with his work and continue to contribute to the development of relations between the mainland and Taiwan.
