Kuchipudi Fever Hits Beijing

To most of us, traditional Indian dance means the dazzling moves and bewitching songs of Bollywood movies. But, now, the people of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai are getting the chance to see some of the best of the art form up close and personal. It's called Kuchipudi, and maestro Jayaram Rao and wife Vanashree, are now touring China with their troupe.

Bhavas, or facial expressions, scintillating rhythm and fluid moves, this is what makes Kuchipudi so exciting. Performed by maestro Jayaram Rao and his wife, the troupe comes to Beijing with a show that has captivated audiences all over the world.

The dance takes its name from the village of Kuchipudi in the State of Andhra Pradesh. It embodies the local Telugu culture in its variety and richness. Originally a form of drama, Kuchipudi evolved as a dance unique to the region.

The Raos have been dancing as a couple since 1978. They've performed in over 45 countries. This year, India awarded the guru one of the country's highest civilian awards for his service to the arts.

Kuchipudi Dancer Vanashree Rao said, "Every classical dance have some basic things, that is technique, body movement and storytelling. Classical dance means very meditative profession. This profession does not for popularity and does not for entertainment only. But every performer should bring to the audience feeling of joy and feeling of spirituality. The mind is more important than the body."

To help demystify Kuchipudi, the troupe invited a dance expert to explain the meaning of the dazzling but mysterious gestures. This dance on a bronze plate had the audience spellbound.

An audience Zhu Yixi said, "The show displays the rich culture, history and traditions of the Indian people. I fell in love with Indian song and dance when I was young, so this explanation helped a lot."

When something captures the spirit of a people, the whole world knows it. Kuchipudi does that for India, and audiences in China are now getting the chance to experience it too.
