Two-humped Camels on the Rise

The number of two-humped camels in Inner Mongolia's Alxa Left Banner, the land of camels, rebounds evidently this year. By the end of June, the number reached 43,000, an increase of over 5,000 compared to the same period last year. This is an increase for the third consecutive year.

Alxa Left Banner, located in the desert area, is suitable for camel breeding. There were 133,826 two-humped camels in 1982, a record high figure. After that, the number declined sharply and hit the record low in 2002 with only 26,993 camels.

In recent years, Alxa Left Banner has taken various measures and worked out many favorable policies to strengthen protection of camels as well as encourage herdsmen to raise camels. All these efforts help save the camels from the brink of extinction and increase the number of this unique type of two-humped camels.
