Typhoon Matsa Hits Beijing Today

Weather forecasters say there will be storms in Beijing today and tomorrow as the capital falls under the influence of Typhoon Masta.

The Typhoon landed in the town of Ganjiang in east China's Zhejiang Province early Saturday morning and is moving northwestward. Its center has passed through Zhejiang Province, the city of Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, and Shandong Province, causing major damage.

The main body of the Typhoon arrives in Beijing early Monday morning, and will bring storms, especially in the middle, western and southern parts of the city, where the rainfall will be over 100 mm.

This rainfall will be the strongest the capital has seen in recent years in terms of range as well as the strength, according to Guo Hu, the Director of Beijing Meteorological Observatory.

Beijing's flood control authorities met Sunday afternoon to assign flood control work, while reservoirs, rivers and areas of one-storey houses will be closely monitored.

Beijing Capital Airport is preparing itself for the coming storms. Flights were canceled over the weekend but are gradually getting back to normal Monday although flights to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai might still be delayed.
