National Standards for Medical Waste Disposal Announced

The State Environmental Protection Administration, in collaboration with the State Administration of Quality Control and Quarantine and the State Development and Reform Commission, recently announced the technical standards for the vehicles for the transfer of medical waste and the medical waste incinerators.

The standards were drafted by the Chinese Academy of Environmental Science during the outbreak of the SARS epidemic with a view to making an unharmful disposal of the medical waste and protecting the environment.

The transfer vehicles must be marked to show that they carry medical waste and should be easy for sterilization and washing and be leakage proof.

The incinerators must conform to the technical indexes in gas emission, wastewater discharge and dust treatment. They must have a complete set of smoke purification system and on-line automatic smoke monitoring systems.
