Support for Consensus on Iraq Needed: FM

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Thursday described the just-concluded international conference on Iraq as "a successful meeting" and called on the international community to carry out the consensus reached at the meeting.

Positive achievements were made at the meeting when parties concerned reached a consensus on promoting the political process, helping restore stability and strengthening the leading role of the United Nations in Iraq's reconstruction, said spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue at a regular news conference.

This demonstrated the support of the international community for peace in Iraq, she added.

Representatives from more than 20 countries and organizations, including Iraq and its neighbors, the Group of Eight, China, the UN and the European Union, participated in the international conference hosted by Egypt in Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday.

Wang Guangya, China's permanent UN representative, attended the conference as special envoy of the Chinese Government, and played a "constructive role" for the success of the meeting, Zhang noted.

China is always active in participating in Iraq's reconstruction and is implementing its commitment to this effect, Zhang said, adding China will provide US$1 million worth of material aid to support Iraq's general election, and help it train diplomats and personnel in economic management and energy development.

China is looking forward to a peaceful, stable and democratic Iraq to return to the international community and is willing to work with all parties to properly settle the Iraq issue, she said.
