US Tanks Roll into Kurdish Stronghold in Northern Iraq
US tanks on Thursday rumbled into Arbil, which is the main town in the Kurdish-controlled zone in northern Iraq, reports reaching Ankara said.

It was the first time US armor had got so close to the northern Iraqi front line. Both Mosul, Iraq's third city, and the northern oil capital Kirkuk, are just 80 km from Arbil.

A column of at least 12 Abrams battle tanks and a number of other armored vehicles rolled toward a temporary US base at Arbil airfield.
