A US soldier was killed and another injured in an explosion at a munitions dump they were guarding south of Baghdad, the US Central Command said on Monday.

The blast, which occurred Sunday morning near Ad Diwaniyah, some120 km south of Baghdad, was not believed to have been the cause of hostile fire, the Central Command said in a statement.

The injured soldier was transported to a field hospital where he underwent surgery, according to the statement.

Both soldiers' names were withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, it added.
