A Forest of Bells

Ancient bells in China were at the height of development during the Ming and Qing dynasties. As a carrier of Chinese history and culture, the ancient bells attained greater perfection and richness both in shapes and cultural connotations. The ancient bells were classified into ceremonial bells, musical bells, Buddhist bells, Taoist bells, imperial court bells and bells for sounding the night watches. They could be used to celebrate grand occasions, hold sacrificial rites, keep a record of events, admonish the world or give the correct time. Their numerous types and various functions feature the long history and rich connotations of ancient Chinese bells. While finding their differences in shapes, decorative patterns, sizes, weights and functions, the visitors can probe into their rich connotations.
