Since the dawn of May 14, hundreds of Iraqis were at the main gate of Abu Ghraib prison west of baghdad waiting for their thousands of detainees inside the compound. US officials had previously said that about 300 prisoners would be released on Friday, part of a months-long programme that this week would cut the number of detainees to between 1,500 and 2,000 by the end of next month.
