We will describe the different components of higher education in France -- Universities, Institutes of technology, and the so-called Grandes Ecoles, stressing in particular the impact of the worldwide tendency today to distrust science. For enlightening this point, we will give some historical hints about the complex and subtle relationship between the academic world and society, and give some proposals for bridging the gap.
