Liao said at a special meeting of the Finance Committee that as a result of the Administration's efforts in expediting public works and better internal coordination as well as less adverse weather conditions, some of the major projects have progressed faster than original forecast.

She said about 29.2 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$3.74 billion) will be spent in public works projects in this fiscal year.

Liao said the top priorities in transport for the coming year include completing as soon as possible the study on the process for adjustments of public transport fares; completing the study on the pros and cons of the merging of two major railways; implementing the various high priority railway projects; implementing the various road construction projects; implementing the various infrastructure projects to enhance Hong Kong's link with the Pearl River Delta Region; and continuing to monitor the service level and improve the coordination of public transport services.

Liao said the Hong Kong government remains committed to keeping up the momentum of its investment in public infrastructure.

As to the future, Liao said the government will continue to launch pilot schemes to promote private sector participation in public work projects.
