Vice-president Stresses Importance of Working Class
A meeting was held in Beijing Tuesday commending the Chinese model workers and celebrating the role of workers ahead of International Labor Day on May 1.

Chinese vice-president Zeng Qinghong praised front-line medical staff for their efforts and bravery in combating severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Zeng said that nothing, including SARS, could hinder the nation's modernization drive and progress towards the goal of building the kind of affluent society proposed in the 16th Party Congress.

He emphasized the importance of the great historical role played by the Chinese working class.

The Chinese working class had always been the main driver advancing economic development, social and historical progress, and was the main force for socialist construction, he said.

"Wholehearted reliance on the working class is the fundamental guideline of our Party," said Zeng.

He said the construction of an affluent and well-rounded society would not only rely on the working class, but also benefit it by reflecting common wishes and basic interests.

Zeng called on the Chinese working class to follow the guidelines of the Communist Party of China and support policies and measures taken by the country and the Party. He also encouraged people to study hard to improve themselves.

Vice-Premier Huang Ju attended the meeting, and model workers and commended individuals also delivered speeches.
