UN's Role Should Be Strengthened: Wen

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in Beijing Tuesday that the role of the United Nations, as a major multi-lateral venue, should be strengthened instead of being weakened.

Wen made the remarks at a meeting with Jean Ping, president-elect of the 59th Session of the UN General Assembly and Gabonese minister of state and minister of foreign affairs, cooperation and Francophone.

Wen said multi-lateralism is the only way to cope with the threats and challenges of all kinds in the world while the international situation undergoes profound changes.

China has always held that the United Nations should play a key role in international issues and it will, as always, support the work of the UN General Assembly and its president, noted Wen.

Jean Ping arrived in Beijing Sunday morning for a six-day visit. He said that China, the biggest developing country and one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, has important influence on international issues.

He hoped that China will continue to support the United Nations and the UN General Assembly so as to make greater contribution to safeguarding world peace and promoting common development.

Jean Ping met with Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan Sunday and held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Tuesday morning. Both Chinese officials stressed the role of the United Nations in international issues.
