China Endorses Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage

China has endorsed an agreement on the protection of intangible cultural heritage that fully supports related efforts by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO.

Chinese representative to UNESCO Zhang Xuezhong on Thursday submitted a document of China's approval of the pact to UNESCO chief Koichiro Matsuura, noting that China is drafting laws to protect its folk cultural heritage.

The UNESCO chief hailed China's efforts on the protection of intangible cultural heritage, as one of the first signatories of the pact.

The agreement on the protection of intangible cultural heritage was issued in October of last year and China was the sixth country to approve it.
