China, Bangladesh to Deepen Parliamentary Cooperation

Chinese and Bangladeshi top lawmakers agreed in Beijing Tuesday to further parliamentary exchanges to deepen the friendly cooperation between the two countries.

During an hour-long meeting with Speaker of the Bangladeshi National Assembly Jamiruddin Sircar, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said he hoped the two parliaments will conduct exchanges and cooperation at various levels to further the China-Bangladesh friendship.

China and Bangladesh established full diplomatic ties in 1975. Wu said China and Bangladesh enjoy traditional friendship and the cooperation between the two sides has been progressing smoothly during the past years.

He said Sircar's visit to China coincides with Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Bangladesh.

"I believe the high-level visits of the two countries' leaders will surely help strengthen the bilateral ties," said Wu.

Wu said China values its friendship with Bangladesh and is willing to improve trade and economic cooperation with Bangladesh.

He also expressed China's appreciation to Bangladesh for its support on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and human rights.

Sircar said China is Bangladesh's major trade partner and the economic cooperation between the two sides benefits the Bangladeshi people and the country's economy.

He also reiterated that the Bangladeshi government, parliament and people will firmly abide by the one-China policy.
