State Councilor Meets Abbas

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan Wednesday praised Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas for his active efforts in promoting the Mideast peace process.

Abbas arrived in Beijing Tuesday afternoon on a three-day visit.

In a meeting with Tang, China's former foreign minister, Abbas briefed him on the current situation in the Middle East.

Tang suggested the Palestinian authority "take opportunities" and keep seeking solutions through negotiations to win more sympathy and support from the international community.

Tang visited Palestinian territories at the end of 2004 and met with Abbas.

It is Abbas' first China trip since he succeeded the late Yasser Arafat to be the president of the Palestinian National Authority.

On Wednesday, President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Abbas for a discussion on ways to enhance bilateral relations.
