Young Chinese Pop Singers Compete for Asian Contest Places
A national singing contest opened in Shanghai Saturday to select young Chinese pop singers to take part in a contest for new Asian pop singers in November.

About 100 pop singers selected from around the country will compete for five places. According to the sponsor, young Chinese had flocked to take part with about 2,000 singers alone in central China entering.

The new Asian pop singer contest is the only pop music contest hosted on the Chinese mainland. Singers from 13 Asian countries, from Cyprus to Uzbekistan and Georgia, will take part in this year's contest.
