Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao yesterday strongly condemned the armed hostage-takers.
"We are very concerned about the situation and strongly condemn terrorist actions," Liu said.
Liu said China is trying to establish whether any of its nationals are among those being held hostage.
He also said China was confident that the Russian Government is capable of solving the problem smoothly.
