Top Legislator Meets Kuwaiti Guests
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met a Kuwaiti delegation led by Mohammad Jassim Al-Sager, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of Kuwait (NAK) on Thursday.

Li remarked that Kuwait was the first member state of the Gulf Cooperation Council to establish diplomatic relations with China.

The friendly cooperation between the two sides in the political, trade and economic arenas has developed steadily and the Chinese people appreciate the support from the Kuwaiti people on the issues of Taiwan and human rights, Li added.

Li said China would firmly back Kuwait's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Li praised the continuous development of relations between the NPC and the NAK. He said the positive evolution of the relationship had played an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and promoting friendly cooperation between the two institutions.

The NPC attaches great importance to its relations with the NAK, Li said, and is willing to strengthen contacts and cooperation.

Li said that the Chinese people felt sympathy for the suffering of the Kuwaiti people during the Gulf War and would support measures by the Kuwaiti people to preserve their national dignity.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China will spare no efforts to work for peace and stability in the Gulf region, Li stressed.

Sager said the NAK is satisfied with the current level of its cooperation with the NPC. He added that Kuwait greatly appreciates the positive and important role China has played in Middle East issues and other international issues.

Sager thanked China for its sympathy and support offered during the Gulf War.

He said the NAK would continue to make every effort to advance bilateral ties.
