As long as China and the United States abide by the principles enunciated in the three joint communiqués and engage in closer cooperation, the future of bilateral relations will be bright, a senior Chinese military officer said in Beijing Monday.
Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, made the remark at a meeting with a delegation of officers from the US National Defense University Capstone Program, headed by Thomas Morgan, a retired general.
Xiong said that Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President George W. Bush have met three times since October, 2001, and reached important consensus on developing constructive and cooperative bilateral relations and enhanced bilateral ties.
He said bilateral military ties are an important part of constructive China-US cooperative relations. China is willing to implement the spirit of the meetings between the two presidents and enhance military relations with the United States.
Morgan said that he has visited China several times as head of the National Defense University delegation. The exchanges between national defense universities of the two countries have enhanced mutual understanding and bilateral military relations.
He expressed the hope that the exchanges will be maintained.
The US guests, who arrived in Beijing Sunday, will leave for Chengdu in southwest China Tuesday to continue their visit.
