LG Electronics, the world's fourth largest handset manufacturer, has announced it will promote the world's first tri-mode phone T8150M in China.

The new phone offers compatibility not only with China's TD-SCDMA and Europe's WCDMA networks, but can also perform with GSM/GPRS standards.

"LG is the world leader in 3G mobile devices, and has been actively working with relevant parties on the development of all 3G standards including WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA," said LG Electronics spokesperson Jeon Chang Soo.

He said China is the world's biggest cell phone market. The newtri-mode 3G phone was developed by the LG Electronics' China R&D center.

LG Electronics is a senior member of the TD-SCDMA Forum, an international body that promotes the global uptake of TD-SCDMA technology founded in 2000.

The LG Electronics China R&D center has been working closely with the leading TD-SCDMA chipset maker Commit Inc. and infrastructure vendor TD-Tech to jointly develop TD-SCDMA devices and systems. LG is planning to launch the new handset in China after the issuance of 3G licenses and the deployment of China's 3G networks.
